Music

At Castle Hill Infant and Junior Schools we make music an enjoyable learning experience. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build the confidence of all children. Singing is used to support and enhance class topics. It’s incorporated into many other areas of the curriculum, including English and Maths, as a way of remembering meanings and facts.

In the EYFS and KS1 music is taught through the Kodaly methodology. It involves singing, playing, and moving from memory, through traditional folksongs of the mother tongue often incorporating movement. The children become aware of musical elements including pulse, rhythm, pitch, loudness and speed, building on the key musical skills of listening, singing in tune and inner hearing. As children get older, the children are expected to maintain their concentration for longer, and to listen to more extended pieces of music. Children develop descriptive skills in music lessons when learning about how music can represent feelings and emotions. We also teach children to make music together, to understand musical notation and how to compose pieces.

At Castle Hill we believe that music enriches the lives of people, and so we wish to involve as many children as possible in musical activities. KS2 children have the opportunity to learn the Guitar and Year 2 and 3 children learn the recorder during their wholes class music lesson.

We have a school choir that we encourage all KS2 children to join. The choir meets on a weekly basis and, although its primary aim is to enable children to enjoy singing together, it also performs at various events such as the Spring and Summer Fayres. Most recently the choir performed at, ‘Celebrations 2018’, held at Snape Maltings in front of a large audience. Currently the choir are preparing for the ‘Big Sing’ also at Snape. All children take part in a key stage singing assembly once a week learning a variety of songs of different musical genres. We invite parents to join us for a Christmas sing-a-long to share the songs we have been learning and the EYFS put on a nativity play with lots of singing and dancing.
